Pavones Surf Guide

Guía de Surf de Pavones

One of the longest lefts on earth · Una de las izquierdas más largas del mundo

Updated September 2026 · By Todo Pavones — the town's own directory

🌊 The wave

Pavones is a river-mouth left point break famous as one of the longest lefts in the world — on the right swell a single ride can run for several hundred meters, long enough to make your legs burn before the wave does. The point is rock and cobblestone; it generally handles size well and lines up best around mid tide (low tide exposes rock — ask in the lineup or at a surf shop before your first paddle-out).

📅 When to come

  • April – October (green season): prime time. Consistent south and southwest swells light the point up — this is when the famous mile-long rides happen. Expect rain, mostly afternoons.
  • November – March (dry season): smaller and less consistent, but sunny mornings, lighter crowds and a mellower lineup — a good window for learners.

🤙 Lineup etiquette

When the point fires, it gets crowded and competitive. The rules here are the same as the app's founding rule: locals first. Wait your turn, don't paddle around people to the peak, share waves — a set wave at Pavones is long enough for the whole town to see how you behave on it.

🎓 Lessons, boards & photos — all local

  • Surf lessons: several local instructors teach at the beach — see Surf & Ocean.
  • Boards: buy or sell on the free Surfboards for Sale board, or visit a surf shop.
  • Get your wave on camera: local shooters are under Surf Photography.
  • Nearby: Punta Banco, a few kilometers south, offers beach-break peaks when the point is flat or crowded.

❓ Quick answers

How long is the wave at Pavones?
On a good south swell the left at Pavones connects for several hundred meters — it is widely ranked among the two or three longest left point breaks in the world.

When is the best time to surf Pavones?
April through October, when consistent south and southwest swells arrive. December to March is smaller and cleaner — better for beginners.

Is Pavones good for beginner surfers?
Yes, with a caveat: the point itself suits intermediate and up, but local instructors teach beginners on gentler inside sections and nearby beach breaks year-round.

What tide is best at Pavones?
Generally mid tide — low tide exposes rock along the point. Ask in the lineup or at a local surf shop before your first paddle-out.

Pura vida. 🤙
